Shortly after payment has been received in the ASM member subscription office, new subscribers will be sent an e-mail or letter with activation instructions. New online subscribers will need their ASM member customer numbers. Note that you will be creating a username and password for your online journal subscription; this is a separate profile from your ASM membership record. To activate, click here
If you renew an active online journal subscription, the expiration date for your online record should be updated shortly after your renewal is processed. If you find that you cannot access your online subscription journals, you might need to repeat the activation process.

For an institutional online subscription renewal, before you renew, it is important that you review the subscription agreement terms and conditions (site license) that apply to the year for which you are renewing, since the license may have changed from that of the previous subscription year. Please review ASM's
2009 site license.

Ordering Procedures for ASM Members
ASM members receive deep discounts on journal subscriptions plus other member benefits. To subscribe to a print or online ASM journal as a member, please do the following:
Individuals can complete the appropriate membership application at http://estore.asm.org. Full, Postdoctoral, and Transitional members save $2 by paying their dues online. Alternatively, members can produce a pro forma invoice after completing the membership application and send their payment to the Member Subscription Office address listed below. No discount applies.

Renewing members can renew online. Members preferring not to pay online with a credit card have the option of printing a customized invoice. To do so, you must access renew online and choose "Offline payment method" when you get to the pre-checkout page. An invoice suitable for printing will be produced that you can then print and submit with your payment. Full members are eligible to receive $15 off select ASM Press titles in the ASM eStore if they renew their 2009 membership ONLINE by midnight EST 12/31/08. Producing a pro forma invoice, which is then faxed or mailed to ASM does not constitute renewing online and will not qualify for a discount. No book discount is awarded to Full renewals processed online after 12/31/2008 eStore.
For online subscribers: Approximately two weeks after payment has been received at ASM, new subscribers will be sent an e-mail or letter with instructions for obtaining access. The letter will direct you to an online form, where you will be asked to provide the following information for your journal subscription record:
- Name, phone number, and e-mail address
- ASM member number (included with the letter)
- A user name and a password that you can easily remember
Subscription Term: An online subscription is for the calendar year. Once a subscription terminates, further access to the online journal will be denied unless renewed. However, free access is granted to a journal's archive (i.e., issues published more than four [4] months previously for the primary-research journals and one [1] year previously for the review journals).
Member Online Subscribers Have Access To: Tables of contents, abstracts, accepted manuscripts published online aheadof final issue publication, full-text searching, full-text display in both HTML and PDF formats, Figure/Table Searching, access to the entire ASM Minireview Collection, and links to outside databases (e.g., PubMed). They also have the advantage of password access from any computer.
Members can also subscribe to ALL 11 online journals for 2009 for only $236 and to discount journal packages for $200.

Subscribing to an Online Journal Only:
An online subscription provides access for an institution in one geographic location (e.g., one city) that has 1 - 200 (price A), 201 - 1,500 - (price B), or 1,501 - 3,500 (price C) doctoral students (PhD, MD, or DVM, etc.) and post-doctoral programs plus faculty and postdoctoral programs in the Life Sciences (life science employees for companies). All institutional subscribers must agree to this license before access is granted (subscribers will be asked to agree online during access activation - please do not mail us a signed agreement). Please review the terms and conditions outlined in the 2009 online site license.
Submit your order and payment to your subscription agent or directly to the ASM Institutional Subscription Office. If you are ordering through a subscription agent, it is important that they submit your site administrator contact information to us. This will allow us to process your order promptly and contact the correct individual with activation instructions via e-mail.
Once your order and payment have been received and processed by ASM's Institutional Subscription Office, a letter or e-mail with instructions for obtaining access to the online journal(s) will be sent to your site administrator. This letter will give direction to an online form to provide the following information necessary to activate the online subscription:
- Institution's IP address(es)
- Contact name, title, phone, fax, and e-mail
- Customer number (included in the letter)
As soon as ASM receives a correctly completed access form, the subscription will be activated and an e-mail notification will be sent to the site administrator.
Institutional online renewals:
Before you renew, it is important that you review the subscription agreement terms and conditions (site license) that apply to the year for which you are renewing, since the license may have changed from that of the previous subscription year. Please review ASM's 2009 site license.

However, free access is granted to a journal's archive (i.e., issues published more than four [4] months previously for the primary-research journals and one [1] year previously for the review journals) subject to the terms and conditions outlined in the site license agreement.

How To Use This Site Without a Subscription
If your institution did not subscribe to any online ASM journals in 2008,you’re eligible for a free 3-month trial subscription to all 11 ASM journals, which must conclude by November 30, 2008. To take advantage of this offer, simply download this Application Form and submit the completed form to ASM at asmusa{at}pcgplus.com
Without a subscription, you have access to the tables of contents, abstracts, and search features (except figure/table searching). For the primary-research journals, access to accepted manuscripts and full-text articles is limited to subscribers until 4 months after the final published version is published, at which time access becomes free to everyone. For the review journals, Microbiology and Molecular Biology Reviews and Clinical Microbiology Reviews, access to full-text articles is limited to subscribers until 1 year after an issue's publication, at which time access becomes free to everyone.
You can purchase short-term, online access to an article. Click into the full text or PDF of the article on the ASM website. If you are not accessing an online journal subscription, you can purchase the article for limited time viewing.

- What to do if you forget your member number. First please make sure that your e-mail address is updated in your journal subscription record. If you cannot change this in the record, send your online subscription username and request an e-mail update.
- How to view or change your subscription information. Please make sure that your e-mail address is updated in your journal subscription record. If you cannot change this in the record, send your online subscription customer number and request an e-mail update. Please also update your ASM membership information by logging in to the membership directory and clicking on "My Profile" at the top of the page. Both will be needed, one for your online journal subscriptions and the other for your ASM membership.

Managing Your Print Subscription
Member Print Subscriptions
Change of Mailing Address for the Print Journal: you may change your mailing address online by logging in to the membership directory and signing in with your ASM member username and password at the top of the page.
Print Subscription Refund/Exchange Policy: All journal cancellation requests must be received in writing; verbal subscription cancellations are not acceptable. A prorated credit for cancelled journals will be issued. Refunds will not be issued to U.S. and Canadian members unless the refund amount is over $5. Refunds will not be issued to international members unless the refund amount is over $20.
No ASM member may cancel his/her membership; only journal subscriptions may be cancelled.
Member Print Subscription Claims: Members can submit requests to replace missing or damaged journal issues online using the member claim form at http://www.asm.org/MemberClaims/MemberClaims.aspx. Members must be logged in with their ASM membership username and password to access this feature.
Claims- Once delivery begins, claims for print journals must be submitted within the following time frames:
- Claims for the U.S., Canada, and Mexico must be made within 3 months of the mailing date
- Claims for outside the U.S., Canada, and Mexico must be made within 6 months of the mailing date
- Missed issues will be replaced one time only free of charge, and a maximum claim of 3 issues per subscriber per year will be accepted. All claims exceeding this limit must pay a shipping/handling fee of $35.00 for any claimed issues.
Institutional Print Subscriptions
Change of Mailing Address for the Print Journal: You may notify the institutional subscription office, and include the journal title(s), your institutional subscription number, your OLD ADDRESS, and your new address.
Institutional Print Subscription Claims: Missed issues for institutions who subscribe directly through ASM will be replaced one time only free of charge, and a maximum claim of 3 issues per subscriber per year will be accepted. A shipping/handling fee of $35.00 will be charged for each claimed issue over and above this limit.
Claims- Once delivery begins, claims for print journals must be submitted within the following time frames:
- Claims for the U.S., Canada, and Mexico must be made within 3 months of the mailing date
- Claims for outside the U.S., Canada, and Mexico must be made within 6 months of the mailing date

Information for Subscription Agents
General Information:
•Cancellations are not allowed except for duplicate payments. A duplicate payment is considered to be one or more orders for the same journal version.
•Complete back-volume orders will be shipped bulk by traceable carrier. The agent is responsible for paying all shipping costs, duties, and/or taxes.
•Consolidated Order Claims: Missed-issue claims will not be accepted for bulk orders delivered to an agent’s consolidated shipping address.
•Damaged-issue claims must be received within 10 days of delivery.
•Switching from Print to Online: a $35 fee will be assessed for switching orders from print on online.
